Spread the butter evenly on one side of each slice of white bread. The layer should be thin but cover every corner to ensure even browning during cooking.

Place a slice of emmental on the unbuttered side of the bread, add the ham, then a second slice of cheese. Close with another slice of bread, buttered side facing out.

Heat a pan over medium heat. Place the sandwiches and let brown until the bread is deep golden and the cheese starts to ooze from the edges. Flip and press lightly with a spatula.
